A unique running experience through breathtaking views, crystal-clear seas, and pristine nature
At the northernmost tip of Shimojishima lies a 3,000-meter runway. Because one end of the runway aligns with a 17-degree compass bearing used for aircraft landings, the area is widely known as “17END” (Seventeen End). This location is famous for its exceptionally clear waters and is considered one of Miyakojima’s most stunning scenic spots. It’s also a popular site for watching airplanes land and take off up close.
The 17END Half Marathon offers a rare opportunity to run surrounded by the magnificent nature of 17END, Shimojishima, and Irabujima. There are three course options to choose from:
🅰️ Course A (21 km)
This long-distance course is open to participants aged 16 and above. Starting from Heisei no Mori Park, the route follows the outer road of Shimojishima, turning back at scenic spots like Tori-ike Pond and Shiratori Cape. It’s an ideal course for those who want to fully experience the island’s natural charm and have confidence in their stamina.
🅱️ Course B (7 km)
Suitable for elementary school students and older, this mid-distance course also begins at Heisei no Mori Park and takes runners along part of the outer road of Shimojishima before returning. It’s a perfect choice for enjoying the scenery with family or friends in a relaxed setting.
🆑 Course C (2 km Pair Course)
This short course is open to all ages and welcomes runners and walkers alike. Starting from Heisei no Mori Park and turning back at Tida no Sato, this route offers an easygoing run with ocean views—great for casual participants looking to enjoy the natural surroundings.
This marathon event not only promotes health and fitness but also helps revitalize the region by combining sports with tourism. Participants can enjoy a sense of unity with nature while running through the beautiful landscapes of Irabujima and Shimojishima, both known for their mild climate and scenic beauty.
