Sunayama Beach: A Scenic Beach Reached by Descending a Sand Dune—Famous for Its Contrast with Miyako Blue

Sunayama Beach is one of Okinawa’s most iconic and popular tourist spots, known for its stunning blue ocean, white sandy shore, and its tunnel-like rock formation. As its name suggests (“sunayama” means “sand hill” in Japanese), visitors must first climb over a sand dune to reach the beach. The view from the top is breathtaking, with lush greenery, vivid blue skies and sea, and pure white sand creating a beautiful contrast. From the shore, you can see Irabu Island and Ikema Island across the water—making it an ideal photo spot.

The symbolic tunnel-like rock at Sunayama Beach is a natural formation, created as uplifted coral was eroded by ocean waves. The view of the ocean and sunsets framed by this arch is unique to this location and is especially popular with photographers.

Note:

Since February 2022, protective netting and fences have been installed in front of the arch, and entry is now prohibited. When taking photos, please be aware that the fencing may appear in your shots.

Caution:

Sunayama Beach is connected directly to the open sea and may experience rip currents. Swimming is not recommended. Please enjoy only light water play near the shore for safety.
