“A facility where you can enjoy learning about the salt-making process and unique uses of Yukishio. Free admission‼️”
The Birthplace of Yukishio – Miyako Island
Located about 300 km southwest of Okinawa’s main island and surrounded by beautiful seas, Miyako Island is home to the Yukishio Museum, situated just before the Ikema Bridge.

The origins of the museum date back to 2000, when a salt factory was established in the Karimata area. Initially, the facility was off-limits to the public for safety reasons. However, as the name “Yukishio” gained popularity and visitor interest increased, the factory began offering tours in October 2002—thus marking the beginning of the Yukishio Museum as it exists today.

Enjoying the Yukishio Museum
At the Yukishio Museum, you can have fun learning about how Yukishio is made and its unique applications. Admission is free, so feel free to drop by anytime.
In the lounge, visitors can enjoy Yukishio soft-serve ice cream and drinks. It’s especially recommended to sprinkle “awase-jio” (blended salts) made with ingredients like hibiscus or island chili on your soft serve to enjoy a variety of flavor combinations.

Yukishio Sweets & Souvenirs
Miyako Island’s original Yukishio sweets feature a perfectly balanced hint of salt that enhances their sweetness. Popular gift items include the fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth Yukishio Fuwawa, the two types of Yukishio Baumkuchen (hard and soft), and the Yukishio Sandwich Cookies.
The soft-serve ice cream, available in-store, is especially loved by international visitors.
