“A healing spot in Miyakojima’s largest subtropical primeval forest, where you can enjoy rich nature and a wide variety of wild birds”

Ōno Forest is the largest forest on Miyakojima, covering an impressive area of 119 hectares. With native trees such as Akagi (bishop wood), Ryukyu pine, and Tabunoki (Machilus thunbergii), this subtropical forest offers a rare opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the natural environment unique to the island.

Although Miyakojima is known for having no large mountains or rivers, the lush greenery of Ōno Forest stands as a symbol of the island’s rich natural heritage. It is also a popular location for birdwatching, where visitors may encounter a wide range of species native to the Nansei Islands. These include rare and protected birds such as the Ryukyu wood pigeon, whistling green pigeon, Ryukyu flycatcher, and the Okinawa rail. In fact, over 300 bird species have been recorded here, making it a paradise for bird lovers.

The forest also features an observation deck that offers panoramic views of the surrounding subtropical jungle. A leisurely walk along the trails while listening to the seasonal birdsong is highly recommended. Even in summer, the forest remains relatively cool, providing a comfortable environment for forest bathing and a chance to explore Miyakojima’s only greenbelt.
