Located in Kawamitsu, Shimoji, Miyakojima City, Okinawa Prefecture, Upukaa Mangrove—also known as the Kawamitsu Mangrove—is a special area where the rich nature and history of Miyakojima come together. Situated within the Kawamitsu Fishing Port, this area is home to a unique mangrove forest often referred to as a “forest of the sea,” offering visitors a deep, firsthand experience of Miyakojima’s natural beauty.
Culture & History
The Upukaa Mangrove forest developed along the freshwater spring of Ookawa (Upukaa), which flows adjacent to Kawamitsu Fishing Port. The area is home to three types of mangrove plants from the Rhizophoraceae family, along with Bruguiera gymnorhiza (known as Hirugi Damashi). These species thrive in brackish water environments. This region is especially unique because seawater flows in from Yonaha Bay while freshwater rises from the seabed, creating an ideal environment that has naturally fostered a flourishing mangrove ecosystem.
Boardwalk & Observation Deck
One of the key features of the Kawamitsu Mangrove is a 390-meter-long wooden boardwalk. Walking along this path allows visitors to closely observe the mangrove forest. The area also features a viewing deck and a paved walking path, making it ideal for nature observation and photography. Informative signs are placed throughout, providing insight into the local plant and animal life and offering an educational experience for visitors.

Currently, some sections of the boardwalk are damaged and may be closed off. Visitors are advised to check in advance to see if repairs have been completed before planning a visit.
