Matsunoki Observatory

“A Hidden Scenic Spot on Kurima Island Offering Tranquility and Stunning Views”

Matsunoki Observatory is located near the entrance of Kurima Island and is uniquely designed to resemble a Ryukyu pine tree. Often mistaken for a banyan tree (Gajumaru), this observatory is well known for its breathtaking views overlooking the Kurima Bridge and Yonaha Maehama Beach. By descending the long staircase leading from the observatory, you can even see Irabu Island in the distance. The area exudes a peaceful atmosphere that sets it apart from more crowded tourist spots.

Positioned just before entering the main village of Kurima Island, the observatory offers panoramic views of Kurima Fishing Port and Kurima Bridge. It is also a spot where locals gather for casual chats, known as yuntaku, making it a quiet and hidden gem for visitors seeking solitude.

To reach the observatory, turn right at the intersection before entering the village and follow a narrow path. At the entrance, you’ll find a traditional torii gate, and beyond it lies a sacred site called an utaki, a spiritual place revered by islanders. Visitors should refrain from entering and instead observe respectfully from a distance.

Beside the observatory, there is a steep staircase descending a cliff, once used to access a well known as “Kurima-gaa.” However, the stairs are now damaged and dangerous, so entering is strongly discouraged.

The view from the observatory is truly spectacular. Below the cliff lies “Cat Tongue Beach,” and straight ahead you’ll see Yonaha Maehama Beach, with the grand Kurima Bridge stretching off to the right. This peaceful and beautiful scene offers a deeply moving experience for all who visit.

Matsunoki Observatory is ideal for those seeking quietude and natural beauty. Though not a major tourist attraction, it allows you to enjoy a slower pace and a deeper connection with nature. When visiting Kurima Island, don’t miss this hidden spot where you can immerse yourself in serenity.
