Yamatobu Rock is a massive travertine (limestone formation) situated on the eastern side of Irabu Island, just below the Makiyama Observatory. Known locally as “Yamatubuugisu,” the rock stands approximately 25 meters tall, 18 meters in diameter, and weighs over 30,000 tons. Its overwhelming presence is a true marvel of nature.

History and Geological Background
This enormous rock was formed when Tomori coal limestone was pushed to the surface due to fault movements and other geological shifts. It holds significant geological value and is believed to have served as an important landmark when humans first settled on Irabu Island. It also likely functioned as a gateway to the Shimomaki (Tsumyagi) coast.
