Miyakojima Public Market

“A local market with a unique atmosphere, different from Naha’s Makishi or Ishigaki Island’s public markets”

The Miyakojima Public Market has long been a beloved spot for local residents to purchase fresh produce and goods. Located in the heart of Hirara’s downtown area, the market offers a variety of ingredients unique to Miyakojima, including locally grown fruits and vegetables, seafood, mountain produce, and processed foods made from these regional specialties.

Originally built in 1969, the market served the daily needs of the local community for decades. However, due to aging infrastructure, it was closed in November 2007. In an effort to revitalize the area, the market underwent a complete renovation and reopened in July 2011. The renewed space now offers a more comfortable shopping experience and continues to attract both locals and visitors.

At the Miyakojima Public Market, you can not only purchase fresh, local ingredients but also get a glimpse into the daily life and culture of the island. For tourists, it’s a valuable place to experience the authentic lifestyle of Miyakojima.
