Ikema Wetland

“Okinawa’s largest wetland—enjoy the majestic scenery shaped by nature from the observatory.”

Ikema Wetland, known locally as “Yunimui,” is the largest wetland in Okinawa Prefecture. Located in the center of Ikema Island, it spans approximately 13% of the island’s total area. It is recognized as one of the “500 Important Wetlands in Japan” by the Ministry of the Environment, and the entire island is designated as a national wildlife protection area.

Historically, Ikema Island consisted of two separate islets. A bridge was constructed in the 16th century, and over time, sediment built up to form the current landmass. The wetland was created during land reclamation efforts between 1924 and 1934 and is still affectionately known as the “Yunimui Wetland.”

Covering roughly 38 hectares, the wetland supports a diverse range of flora and fauna. Visitors can observe wild birds and aquatic life from the observatory, where views of the sprawling aquatic plants unique to the wetland create a breathtaking natural landscape. Easily accessible by crossing the Ikema Bridge from Miyako Island, this lush and serene destination is well worth a visit.
