Overview and Location
Minna Island is part of the Miyako Islands and belongs to Tarama Village in Miyako District, Okinawa Prefecture. It is located approximately 8 km north of Tarama Island. With a total area of 2.15 square kilometers, the island features a flat landscape formed by uplifted coral reefs.
Natural Environment and Ecosystem
Minna Island is surrounded by a large atoll, with an especially wide, shallow reef stretching across its western side. This area serves as a habitat for numerous green sea turtles, making it a rare and valuable spot for wildlife observation. In the summer of 2008, the island also gained attention when over 20 short-finned pilot whales became stranded and sadly perished.
History and Population
In the past, Minna Island was home to around 200 residents, primarily engaged in fishing. However, due to frequent typhoons and water shortages, 18 households relocated to Miyako Island in 1961 under a planned resettlement by the Ryukyu government. As a result, the population drastically declined. As of 2016, only one household with five people remains on the island, living by raising about 100 cows and goats.
Lighthouse and Infrastructure
On the southeastern side of the island stands the Miyako Minna Island Lighthouse, first lit in 1972. It has an elevation of 21 meters above sea level and a range of 12 nautical miles. A heliport is also located nearby. The lighthouse serves as a vital maritime guide and a prominent island landmark.

There are two cottages available for lodging on the island, and camping is also possible. However, since there are no shops on Minna Island, visitors must bring all necessary food and supplies in advance.
Origin of the Name
The name “Minna” is believed to mean “island without water.” True to its name, the island lacks sufficient water resources, which was one of the main reasons for the past depopulation.
Access
There is no regular ferry service to Minna Island. Instead, visitors must take a charter boat from Maedomari Port on Tarama Island, which takes about 20 minutes. Reservations are required. In 2019, access improved with the launch of a new 12-passenger, 12-ton boat named Minna.
A Secondary Remote Island
Tarama Island itself is a secondary remote island with no direct ferry or air routes from Okinawa’s main island. Minna Island is only connected to Tarama, making it one of the few islands that can only be reached via another remote island.
