Located at the base of the Makiyama Observatory on Irabu Island, the Makiyama Military Shelter, commonly known as the “Happy Air-Raid Shelter,” is one of the island’s hidden gems. This shelter was originally excavated during World War II to defend Hirara Port, but construction was halted before the war ended, and it was never actually used. Because it was untouched by the tragedies of war, the site came to be affectionately called the “Shelter of Happiness” or “Happy Air-Raid Shelter.”
The most striking feature of the Happy Air-Raid Shelter is the breathtaking view that awaits beyond the darkness. The inside of the shelter is pitch black and can be slippery, so caution is needed—but once you reach the end, a large opening reveals a spectacular panorama of the Miyako Blue ocean. The view feels like an emotional release from the darkness and leaves a lasting impression, as if the beauty of the sea soothes the wounds of the past.
To access the shelter, first head to Makiyama Park on Irabu Island. Once there, just before the stairs leading up to the Makiyama Observatory, take the second turn on the right, and you’ll find the entrance to the shelter. The entrance is narrow, and the interior is dark and damp, so bringing a flashlight and wearing appropriate shoes is highly recommended.
