Sarakahama Port is a lively fishing port on Irabu Island, known for its bonito hauls and exotic townscape.

Located on the eastern side of Irabu Island, Sarakahama Fishing Port once served as a hub for regular ferry routes between Miyako Island (Hirara Port) and Irabu Island. However, with the opening of the Irabu Bridge in 2015, its role changed. Even so, the port remains an important center for the fishing industry, especially famous for its bonito catches. The traditional “single-line bonito fishing” has a history of over 100 years and is still practiced today.

Restaurants around the port serve fresh bonito rice bowls unique to Miyako Island. It’s also a popular base for marine activities, often used as a meeting point for snorkeling and diving tours. Visiting around noon to enjoy seafood dishes is recommended, but on rough sea days, boats cannot operate, and some restaurants may close, so checking in advance is advised.

Sarakahama Port is also known for the Haarii (Sea God Festival) held on the 4th day of the 5th month in the lunar calendar. During the festival, fishermen throw chunks of bonito and tuna from their boats to pray for safe voyages and abundant catches. The dynamic scene is so striking that the island is sometimes called “Irabu Island, where bonito flies through the air”—a truly special event for the local people.

In addition, the colorful streets of the Sarakahama village are filled with an exotic atmosphere, captivating visitors at every turn. The energy of the port, the deep-rooted traditions, and the beautiful scenery all come together to make this a uniquely charming spot that captures the essence of Irabu Island.
